Ars Technica’s senior Apple editor offers a couple facts that put in perspective Amazon’s new cloud music service and lay bare some of the challenges that the company could meet along the way:
- Apple and Google are expected to release competing services, so it’s best to see what features and pricing they’ll offer before choosing a platform.
- As awesome as it sounds, Amazon’s player that allows users to stream their uploaded and stored tracks might draw legal heat from the music industry, and there’s no telling if this feature will stick around. If Amazon can legally allow its users to stream their uploaded tracks without additional payment on those streams, the record labels will have a harder time justifying charging for other streaming services like Pandora, Rhapsody, etc. In other words, Amazon’s threatening a big source of digital revenue for the music industry.
