Everyone has an opinion about whether FCP X is a step forward or backward from 7. For my money, X is awesome in many ways. But rather than rehash old arguments, I’ll offer some detailed, nitty-gritty points about my experience with the new platform. To start, let me say something about nesting stills in X to form a time lapse sequence.

The process of creating large time lapses — say, with 150+ images — is a hard slog in FCP X. Even when running 64 bits, X is just too sluggish to handle the process of importing and then sequencing many images. Incredibly slow.

I should mention that I’m running a 2010 MBP, Intel Core Duo 2.66 GHz with 4 MB RAM. So not exactly a weak machine.

If you’re trying to make a time lapse, my advice would be to create the clip in 7 and the export it as a compressed H.264 video. Then import this into X. Problem solved.
